Once you become familiar with the game’s maps and start defeating enemies, you’ll realize there’s an abundance of loot —surely more than you can carry due to space and weight limits! It’s essential to know what to prioritize . Beyond items needed for tasks or the hideout, it’s crucial to identify items with the most utility and value. This will come with experience, but until then, there are several websites where you can check the value of items, even mid-raid: Tarkov Market Tarkov Guru Database for Tarkov There are also apps that display additional in-game information, like item values when you hover the mouse pointer on them, but it’s not 100% clear whether using them risks a ban, so I don’t feel comfortable promoting the use of these tools to you. A common rule many players follow is to fill their inventory with items worth more than 10,000 rubles per slot . For example, a single-slot item worth over 10,000 rubles or a four-slot item worth more than 40,000 rubles. Note: Patch 0.16 introduced a pretty big change by introducing the rule by which now to upgrade your hideout you need FIR (Found In Raid) items . Read the article I wrote about this for info, tips and a greatly useful video made by Pestily on where to find the loot you need! TIP: Some containers take up fewer slots than the number of slots they provide. For example, certain chest rigs occupy 9 slots but offer 16 internal slots. This means that by placing such a rig inside your backpack, you effectively gain 7 additional slots ! The only drawback is that the rig adds weight, which can slow you down or drain your stamina faster. However, this is a valuable trick to learn, especially early on when you're undergeared and usually carrying a lighter load. In either case, you’ll need to approach and loot them. First, remember that looting bodies is optional . Only loot if it’s relatively safe (for example, avoid looting bodies in open fields where you’re exposed to multiple lines of sight), and only after checking that there are no other enemies nearby. You can never be completely sure there are no threats around, so if it feels too risky, it’s better to move on . It’s far better to miss out on loot than to die and lose everything you already have. There’s also the infamous “YOLO Technique ”, where you rush to loot without checking anything, grab what you can as quickly as possible, and run. Sometimes it works out, but don’t complain if it doesn’t, and you end up with a hole in your head! If you decide to loot a body, be quick and avoid wasting time arranging items perfectly in your bag. Take the essentials and leave the rest if you’re out of space or becoming too heavy. Greed can be deadlier than a squad of angry Tagillas. Always remember that danger could be just around the corner and that the sound of gunfire will likely attract other AI or players who will ambush you if you relax too much after eliminating an enemy. Use hotkeys to quickly transfer items to your inventory instead of dragging each item manually, which wastes valuable time. CTRL + Left Click moves an item from an external container to your inventory. ALT + Left Click equips a weapon or wearable item (rig, backpack, helmet, etc.) if the slot is available. DELETE discards an item, dropping it on the ground (read the Keybinds Guide for tips on rebinding this command to a more accessible key, as you'll use it a lot and timing is critical). IMPORTANT: When auto-moving items to your inventory using CTRL + Left Click, be mindful of where they end up. Some items go directly into your backpack, while others—such as ammo, grenades, and magazines—go into your rig. Remember to always leave at least enough space for the magazine in your weapon , or you will drop it when reloading (take into account your side arm magazine too if you have one equipped, and if you have extra mags for it with you). Many players tend to freeze when they hear or see enemy movement, trying to determine the enemy’s location and movements, stopping to avoid making noise themselves. This can be the right behaviour if the enemy hasn’t noticed you, and may allow you to surprise them with an ambush. However, it's better to assume there is always the possibility that, as you heard or saw them, they might have already heard or seen you before you stopped moving. Experienced players can easily make you believe they haven’t noticed you, only to set up an ambush or target you while you think they’ve moved on. Staying still gives them the advantage , letting them take the initiative. They can surround and flank you, create distractions with other sounds like gunfire or grenade explosions, effectively trapping you and making you an easy prey . It’s better to move and keep the enemy uncertain of your exact position rather than remaining in a spot where they’ve already pinpointed you , giving them the initiative . In any case, never be passive. If you want to set an ambush, do it. But never freeze in a corner waiting for a sound. Make sure to always have a plan (and possibly also a plan B in case things go south). It’s time to try fighting against AI enemies (while you keep exploring and learning the maps you chose to start with). Choose a basic loadout (see next section for some starting tips ), but don’t forget to select the Practice Mode . This way, even if you’re killed, you won’t lose anything, and any ammo you use won’t deplete your inventory, as it will reset to its pre-raid state. Initially, I recommend disabling the bosses . Bosses are a much tougher version of regular AI, with some possessing special abilities and armed guards protecting them. Trust me, initially they will probably seem impossible to beat. But you'll learn to deal with them. By disabling bosses, you’ll also avoid higher-level AI like Raiders and Rogues , facing only Scavs instead. To learn about the different types of enemies and their characteristics, click here for more about the enemies you’ll encounter in EFT . It’s a good idea to set AI difficulty to “easy” at first and gradually increase it as you become more comfortable with combat. Later, when you feel more confident, you can also increase the number of AI enemies to practice handling more intense situations. Knowing where others spawn, the “hot zones” with valuable loot, mission areas, and well-trodden paths is game-changing . These insights come with experience, studying maps, familiarizing yourself with quest locations, and watching videos from streamers and content creators on YouTube. The first step in this learning process can be looking at the map to identify the spawn points . There won’t always be a player at every spawn, but these points give you a sense of where enemies might approach from, so you can keep an eye on those areas and prepare. Another tip is to take into account is timing . Usually, the first minutes of a raid are the busiest. Experienced players know where to go and head for high-value loot areas or advantageous positions early on, before others get there first. Your approach can be to start slowly , avoiding rushing headlong toward your objective. Move cautiously and let those initial minutes pass. Listen closely—you’ll likely hear gunfire and fights, which can also help you pinpoint enemy locations. As things quiet down, some players will have been killed, and others may already be heading to extraction with their loot. This is why the second half of the raid is typically “quieter”—not that you can afford to let your guard down, but the initial chaos has usually subsided. Watch out, however, for players entering the raid as Scavs . Player Scavs usually join the raid later (but it depends on the map when and how much later) have lower-quality gear and are usually more interested in scavenging leftover loot or looting corpses than in combat. But don't forget that Player Scavs, having nothing to lose since they spawn with free random gear, can be unexpectedly dangerous and aggressive in combat . They may even have an advantage over you, as you are likely to be more cautious and afraid of losing your gear, loot, and progress. This means that, unlike in most FPS games where the alternative to ADS is hip fire, your character keeps the weapon shouldered and can shoot with high accuracy at close-range targets (up to around 15-20 meters) without needing to aim through the sights. The advantages of Point Fire shooting are that you can move much faster , your field of view is less restricted , and you don’t lose time raising the weapon and aiming through the sight. Mastering Point Fire is one of the key skills for winning engagements in EFT. Initially, it won’t be easy, because in the Point Fire position, you don’t have a crosshair like in other games, and the point of aim isn’t centered on your screen ; it’s wherever your weapon barrel is pointed when you shoot. This is influenced by your movement, and even when you’re stationary, it’s not perfectly aligned with the center of your screen and it will sway. Using laser sights can be a huge help, as they allow you to see where you’re aiming without raising your weapon. However, you won’t have access to these attachments at the beginning, so you’ll need to get used to aiming without them. Even though you won’t have access to them initially, it’s worth noting that attachments like laser sights, flashlights, and infrared illuminators can significantly reduce weapon spread and improve accuracy. Practice shooting without ADSing to get comfortable with this technique. It will take some time, but once you master it, the benefits are enormous , and defenitely worth the pain. Escape from Tarkov offers the option to raid as either a SCAV or a PMC. While the PMC is your main character , playing as a Scav means stepping into the shoes of one of the surviving civilians in the Norvinsk region's conflict. Scavs roam the maps in search of resources to defend themselves and survive. Raiding as a Scav can also be a gameplay style or a way to engage in role play. In fact, there are “Scav mains,” players who prefer raiding in this role and rarely use their PMC. However, for most players, it’s a way to mitigate the unforgiving nature of EFT , both in terms of risk and the tension it creates. One notable aspect to consider is that although the Scav you play as seems like a new character each time, their skills improve and level up over time. The more you use the Scav, the better their skills and stats become, just like your PMC's. Advantages of Using the SCAV Free equipment : Scavs spawn with random but free gear, meaning it’s zero-risk. This allows you to play more relaxed or even more aggressively, as you don’t have to worry about losing valuable gear. Neutrality with other Scavs : Other Scavs won’t attack you as long as your reputation with the trader Fence is positive. Reputation Bonuses : The higher your reputation with Fence, the more benefits you gain: Improved Scav starting gear, including high-value items like a TerraGroup Labs access keycard . Reduced costs for services like the Car Extracts for your PMC. Larger BTR storage for transferring items to your hideout without extracting yourself. Faster Scav Case delivery times in your hideout. Higher resale prices when selling items to Fence, as well as access to level 2 stock. More extract points when playing as a Scav. Cooperation from AI Scavs, who will follow or assist you if requested. Neutrality with Scav Bosses once you reach reputation level 6, allowing you to stay close to them, assist them, and loot defeated PMCs. Disadvantages of Using the SCAV While using the Scav have clear advantages, there are also drawbacks: Cooldown timer : Scavs are not always available. After each Scav raid, there is a cooldown period that decreases as your Fence reputation improves. You can reduce this timer further by building and upgrading the Intelligence Center in your hideout. Random gear : Scavs spawn with unpredictable equipment, which usually includes low-quality weapons, ammo, and armor. Healing items are often limited. Reputation penalties : Killing other Scavs (AI and players) or Bosses (except Partisan) makes you a Rogue Scav, which results in a loss of Fence reputation. Also, all Scavs, Bosses and their guards will become hostile and shoot you. This restriction forces you to avoid the usual “shoot-on-sight” mentality, which can lead to hesitation (and death) in critical moments. Late spawn : Scavs usually spawn into maps after the raid has already started. This means: Less time to gather loot or hunt for enemies (but also a quieter raid, with fewer players remaining, and probably some bodies to loot). Scav Karm and Fence Reputation Scav Karma is represented by the reputation you have with the trader Fence. If your Fence reputation falls below zero , all Scavs and Bosses will become hostile, attacking you on sight. Additionally, your Scav's random starting gear will be of much lower quality. To see how to gain or lose Scav Karma (or Fence reputation) and its effect, check this page in the EFT Wiki . When to use the Scav As mentioned earlier, every player has their preferences. I recommend using the Scav to learn a map you’re unfamiliar with, have a more relaxing raid and to look for loot . When I was learning to play, after running a few raids in Practice Mode to get a first look at the map and learn extraction points, I used to do a few Scav runs to better understand the layout, hot zones, and typical players movements (while also looting items and gear from dead body I found). Additionally, I sometimes used the Scav just to extract and pass its gear to my PMC , either to save money or to start a raid with minimal equipment. A sort of "Almost zero to hero", aiming to improve my loadout by killing other PMCs (or looting already dead ones), or just see what's going to happen without fear of losing my hard-earned gear (Gear Fear ). Now I use the Scav whenever I want to enjoy a quieter raid with less anxiety or when I want to avoid risking money and gear with my PMC (or when I have just the time for a quick run in Factory). Fun fact : even the most relaxed raid using a Scav can become extremely tense and anxiogenic once you find by chance a great piece of loot and suddenly you want to extract alive to take it home with you! To know more about how, why and when to play the Scav I suggest watching this great video by the unmached streamer Pestily: HOW TO USE YOUR SCAV! - GUIDE - Escape from Tarkov Next: PvP or PvE? comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

Escape from Tarkov offers a unique experience with character movements. Through great animations, inertia and sound design, you can feel the weight of your character and weapon, while enjoying a wide range of movement options. To lean the basics about movement, study the Movement section on this EFT Wiki page: How to Play Guide for Escape from Tarkov Here are some tips about Movement: When you sprint you always reach the maximum speed, no matter how heavy you are. What changes is the time you need to reach the maximum speed and the amount of stamina consumed while sprinting. By default, the Q and E keys let you lean left and right, respectively but I strongly suggest changing them - check the Keybinds Guide i prepared to know how and why. Circle strafing: it's a technique that allows players to reduce the impact of inertia on strafing. In other games, when players are in combat they change strafing direction to dodge bullets. In EFT, instead of just pressing A and then D (or vice versa) to change the strafing direction, when in combat or when peeking an angle, it's advisable to press W or S before pressing the key to go in the opposite direction. So if I am strafing left with A and I want to go right to dodge bullets or to go back to cover behind an angle, instead of pressing D immediately, I press W or S and then D. This way the impact of inertia on my direction change is much lower. The two above tips can be combined to maximize the effect when peeking a corner. And in this other video another move is added, the quick lean tecnique - How to quick lean in Tarkov (peek like no generals) For a comprehensive overview of advanced movement techniques to maximize combat success in Escape From Tarkov, I recommend checking out an interesting and useful YouTube video by streamer DesmondPilak : The Ultimate Beginner Movement Guide for Escape From Tarkov . Being a year old, it includes an outdated section on right-peeking and left-peeking (as shoulder transitions hadn’t been implemented at the time), but it remains highly relevant and valuable. One of the most important thing shown is the freelook peek , when he runs past the door and uses freelook to look inside an spot potential enemies. UPDATE: I found another great video explaining advanced movements and providing additional tips by Tarkov Sherpa, streamer and content creator JonnyBooSock : Advanced Tarkov PVP Mechanics - Escape From Tarkov Guide . This video is also a bit old, so it contains one outdated piece of information in the section about "Building Momentum." It suggests running against a wall to gain momentum, but that's no longer possible. BSG patched this exploit—now, if you run against a wall, your character will stop. Note: It’s recommended to disable automatic vaulting in the game settings , as it increases resource consumption. It’s best to set it to a key you press only when you want to vault. For example, I’ve set it to the spacebar—holding it activates vaulting, while tapping it lets me jump. Check the Keybinds Guide for the full explanation on how to set it properly. This way, you’ll learn the mechanics and also understand the differences and options you have. In the previous chapters, we discussed what you might need during a raid, but only experience and practice will help you figure out what you actually need, based on your playstyle and what you want to accomplish in each raid. Just remember that unexpected events are always around the corner . For example, you might decide not to bring food and water because you’re planning a short raid. However, if you’re forced to take a detour or wait because there are enemies nearby, your plans could change. Another tendency EFT has to completely alter your plans is making you find a rare or highly valuable item . A raid you planned to be quick and low-stakes—where you might have entered with minimal gear just to explore—can suddenly become a desperate fight for survival because you want to extract with that juicy loot. Bring Your Best Kit A common piece of advice for new players is to always enter raids with the best gear you have available (armor, weapons, and ammo). This maximizes your firepower and protection, giving you the best chances of surviving and successfully extracting. While the theory behind this advice is sound, I don’t think it’s always the best possible advice, especially for an inexperienced player. First of all, at the beginning, your resources are limited, so you need to save them. Second, at the start, survival isn’t determined so much by your gear as by your inexperience . In my opinion, it’s far more likely for a new player to die because of a mistake they make than because of a lack of gear like armor or weapons. Additionally, the higher the stakes, the greater the Gear Fear , which leads to more tension and nervousness. These emotions can cause hesitation due to the fear of being seen or heard, and in general, they increase the likelihood of making mistakes (If you want to learn tricks to reduce Gear Fear, tension, and nervousness, click on the link above). In my opinion, especially at the beginning, it’s better to find your own “comfort zone” based on what you have and can afford at any given time—something you’re willing to risk without too much fear of losing it. It’s also worth noting that even with the worst kit, it’s possible to take down enemies with far superior gear. That’s the beauty of Escape from Tarkov. So, "Bring your Best Kit"? Sure, but only once you have some experience, and even then, avoid falling into Gear Fear. Scav Kits I found out that a great way to accumulate experience in raid, gain knowledge and confidence, while also avoiding Gear Fear, is running Scav kits. They are free and easy to acquire : Have normal a Scav run trying to loot and survive. When you get back to your hideout, transfer the Scav kit to your PMC . Repair the weapon and armor. If it has no armor you can decide to buy a cheap one or go without. Add some consumabels in needed (healing, ammo, etc.). Hop in a raid. Same as point 1, but you do a Scav run specifically to retrieve the kit. Just enter a raid as a Scav and run to the nearest extract . Factory is the best map to do this because it's small with a lof of options for extract. Loot dead Scavs during your raids as a Scav or PMC. You clearly need to check for the weapon durability. If it's too low it doesn't make much sense to repair it. But even if it's bad it's still a free kit you're using to learn. Keep in mind that weapons can malfunction . Set the right keybinds for inspecting your weapon and fix it in case it happens by checking the article about Keybinds . This leaves you vulnerable and wastes time, but it’s crucial to know that you can perform other actions while looting . To loot a container (dead body, backpack, crate, med bag, sports bag, etc.), you click, the inventory interface opens, and then you must wait as your character inspects the container’s contents, revealing each item one by one. If there's only one item, looting is swift. But if there are multiple items, it can drag on for several seconds . It is vital to know —and exploit—the fact that, simultaneously while your character inspects the container, you can perform other actions: Heal yourself Perform surgery Refill magazines with ammo Eat/Drink Reload your weapon This way, you optimize your time by handling these crucial tasks upfront. Once you finish looting, you’ll be combat-ready and have saved a ton of time. TIP: With the Attention skill maxed out, you have a 50% chance of revealing a container’s contents instantly. (But maxing out your skills takes a lot of time!) More Details While you wait for your character to finish inspecting the container you opened, you cannot right-click an item to open its menu and select an option—but you can double-click an item to use it. This means you can double-click a bottle of water to drink it or a food item to eat it. Likewise, you can double-click a medkit, a bandage, a tourniquet, or a splint to heal yourself , stop bleeding, or treat a fracture. In addition to double-clicking, you can click and hold the left mouse button to drag an object. For example, you can move items to organize your inventory or make room for what you’ll find in the container. Similarly, you can grab a stack of ammo and drag it onto an empty magazine to refill it simultaneously. And so on. Other Actions You Can Perform Simultaneously This isn’t strictly related to looting, but remember: there are other actions you can do simultaneously. It’s important to experiment and get comfortable with all these mechanics—they’ll save you time and let you get back to your mission or the fight. While refilling an empty magazine with ammo: You can also reload your weapon by right-clicking on the weapon and selecting “reload” or by right-clicking on another magazine (not the one you’re loading) and choosing “install.” While reloading your weapon: You can open your inventory and start other actions, such as refilling an empty magazine with ammo, eating, or drinking. While eating or drinking: You can open your inventory and move items around to organize them. Instant Weapon Reload It’s also very useful to know that under certain circumstances you can reload your weapon instantly: If you’re eating, drinking, healing any negative effect (including performing surgery with a surgical kit) : Right-click your weapon and choose “reload” or right-click a magazine and choose “install”—and the reload will be instantaneous and animation-free. If you open your inventory and right-click your weapon and choose “reload” (or right-click a magazine and choose “install”) while holding another weapon (secondary weapon, pistol, or melee weapon). The same applies if you’re holding your primary weapon and perform “reload” on your secondary weapon or sidearm, or “install” on their respective magazines—they’ll reload instantly. This trick can be a lifesaver during a hectic firefight when you’re running out of ammo. However, it requires you to keep a cool head and remember the trick on the fly, and a bit of practice. You need to be able to stop, open your inventory, right-click, and select the option, so it really depends on the situation and your speed.
